The Moment I Learned Texture Matters

Yesterday I saw a post about how much texture matters when using a prosthetic hand.

It immediately took me back to a specific moment in my own early journey.

I was holding a smooth plastic cup.

I went in with a basic grip. Open, close. Something I’d been practicing. Something that had been working.

For a second, it felt secure.

Then it slipped.

The cup fell out of my hand and hit the floor.

It was quick. Quiet. The kind of moment most people wouldn’t think twice about.

But I did.

Because up until that point, I had been focused on the big things.

Grip patterns.

Control.

Switching modes.

What I hadn’t fully considered yet was texture.

There was nothing for the hand to hold onto.

No friction. No resistance.

Just smooth plastic.

Same motion. Completely different outcome.

That moment stuck with me.

Not because it was a failure, but because it showed me something I hadn’t fully understood yet.

Learning to use a prosthetic isn’t just about mastering the grip.

It’s about learning how different surfaces, textures, and objects change the outcome.


The Things You Don’t See

When people see advanced prosthetic technology, they usually see the highlights.

The clean grips.

The smooth motions.

The successful demonstrations.

What they don’t see are the in-between moments.

The ones where something slips.

Where the grip was technically correct, but the result wasn’t.

Where your brain has to recalibrate in real time.

Those moments are where the real learning happens.

Because they force you to ask better questions.

Not just “Did I do the motion right?”

But “What changed?”


It’s Not Just About Control

One of the biggest misconceptions is that better control solves everything.

And control does matter.

But control alone isn’t enough.

Because the environment is always changing.

A ceramic mug behaves differently than a plastic cup.

A textured surface behaves differently than something smooth.

A pill bottle behaves differently than both.

You can use the exact same grip.

And get completely different results.

That’s the part that takes time to understand.


Learning the Language of Objects

Over time, you start to build something harder to describe.

A kind of awareness.

You begin to recognize:

  • which objects need more precision
  • which ones need more pressure
  • which ones will slip if you’re not careful
  • which ones will surprise you

It becomes less about forcing control and more about adapting to the object in front of you.

That’s a different kind of learning.

And it doesn’t happen in a demo.

It happens in everyday life.


Where the Real Learning Begins

That moment with the plastic cup was small.

But it shifted how I think.

It made me realize that progress isn’t just about mastering the device.

It’s about understanding the interaction between the device and the world around you.

The control can be the same.

The result isn’t.

And that’s where the real learning begins.
